Hiratsuka is located in the center of the Sagami Bay coast facing the Pacific Ocean, 50km southwest of the capital, Tokyo. In the Edo period, it was returned as a post town on the Tokaido. Today, the city has a total area of 67.88 square kilometers, a current population of about 260,000, and is blessed with a warm climate and abundant nature. In the area called “Shonan” including Hiratsuka, many artists have lived and developed artistic movements since the Meiji period (the end of the 19th century). For example, “Shirakaba,” a magazine that had a major influence on Japanese modern art and literature, was developed in Kamakura, and Kishida Ryusei's Kusodosha, who pursued a new style of oil painting, was deployed in Kakinuma. Since then, many artists have been active. The construction of an art museum in Hiratsuka City took place shortly after the war. At the center of the recovery from the air raids were local artists who had voluntarily held exhibitions. In the early 1960s, they started a movement to donate one artist to the city. Following the construction of schools, public halls and libraries, the Hiratsuka City Museum opened in 1976, and the art department was established there. . Later, in the same way as the nationwide movement of lifelong learning and museum construction, Hiratsuka established the Museum Construction Research Committee in 1984, and began the concrete movement toward the opening of the museum. In 1986, the Hiratsuka City Art Museum Construction Basic Plan was formulated, after which construction work and business preparations commenced, opening in March 1991. Since its opening, as an art museum located in the center of the Shonan area, the main theme is <Shonan art and light>, and deepen citizens' understanding of culture by offering excellent domestic and foreign art to people in a good environment. We have implemented various businesses with the main purpose of stimulating motivation for creation and learning. In the future, we will continue to enhance the activities of the museum in order to play a part in the maturity of the culture of the Shonan region and to have many people become familiar with it.
